WTF? my keyboard layout changed while I was working under Eclipse!

Just happened again to me. Once again. And I had to search once again how to fix it.
Actually, I was playing with Eclipse shortcuts…and I fired Alt+Shift several times…which seems to be the default shortcut under windows to switch between registred keyboard layouts. I don’t remember why but I registred a QWERTY layout (but can’t remember when I could have use it), but I always work with an AZERTY layout.
2 solutions:

  • change the windows shortcut (that is global to windows, i.e. that will surcharge any application shortcut)
  • unregister the layout that you never use

In both cases, go to Control Pannel > Regionnal Settings > Languages > Details.

  1. I agree. I very often encounter the same problem playing with Eclipse shortcuts.

I put the “lang bar” in my “Windows startup bar” to control the current lang visually.

  2. This happends to me aswell.. But i dont have any other languages then my native (danish) layout installed, and still it switched to the english one… Weird, any ideas?

  3. That it’s a problem from Windows key configuration:

It happened to me also, and I though that it was an eclipse bug… but today i found the solution:

Go to control panel -> regional and language configuration (my Windows it’s in spanish).
Go to the language tab -> Details button and in the Preferences, you have a Key configuration (Configuración de teclas..) button. Press it,and look for the “change between input languages ” (configuración entre idiomas de entrada). Press the “change key sequence (cambiar secuencia de teclas)” button, and remove the combination (for me it was alt+left shift)

And thats all!! wellcome to the fantastic and intuitive world of windows!!

  4. Not to defend windows, but I’ve never encountered this “bug” outside of eclipse. Not once has word, notpad++ or any other application switched my keyboard layout with something as obvious as alt+shift.
Heck not once has any application switched my layout. Ever.
That windows makes it hard to switch is as it should be.
PS.. to change it back to the language, simply press alt+shift in eclipse again.

  5. Oh man, thanks a lot… It was driving me crazy!

  6. Thanks dude!
